Berkeley Eats

Berkeley Eats is a printed magazine created to help ease the decision of where to eat out in Berkeley, CA as well as promote local restaurants and cafes. With a diverse array of international cuisines and organic, farm-to-table dining, Berkeley is the home of UC Berkeley and the Gourmet Ghetto, attracting not only foodies, but business people, college students and their families, and tourists visiting the Bay Area. Berkeley Eats is free to the public and available at local coffee shops and drugstores near BART stations and transbay buses.

Design Problem and Approach

Berkeley is an incredibly diverse city that it was a challenge to create a single compelling look and feel that would speak to a multi-generational audience from many walks of life. In my research, I looked at Nosh, a section in Berkeleyside's website dedicated to local food news and considered food movements that started in Berkeley like the Edible Schoolyard Project - a program for students to learn about growing and cooking healthy, nutritious food.

When I start a new project, I'll jot down some adjectives describing the business or emotives which helped direct sketches for the magazine logo. The layout sketch below is for the feature article on Tender Greens. I also looked at menus from the restaurant, Chez Panisse, to create the magazine's warm and natural color palette.
