Cal Greek Women Reunion

UC Berkeley is an internationally recognized public university based in Berkeley, CA. For a Homecoming event in 2018, I worked with fundraisers and a volunteer committee to promote an inaugural UC Berkeley sorority reunion for alumnae across multiple decades. In my role, I created a one-paged flyer that could be used in both print and digital formats for the volunteers to handout in their outreach.

Design Problem and Approach

Cal already has a strong brand, but over the years, student organizations have modified the brand to meet their own communication needs. This also applied to the Greek system, which did not have unified or coordinated branding at Cal. Therefore, the challenge lay in creating one visual brand to represent all Cal sororities and utilize Cal's identity. Also, the reunion was for all living sorority alumni, the oldest of whom had graduated in the 1940s and the sororities have diversified racially and culturally over the decades, so I wanted to avoid using photos to represent all sorority members. The other challenge was that I had to be mindful that volunteers might need to print the flyer using their own printers at home, so I also took into consideration the amount of color being used.

With these thoughts in mind, I decided to use a photo of the Fiat Lux symbol, located on the top Sather Gate - an image widely used in UC Berkeley marketing and recognized by alumni. I also kept the colors light for readability; most Berkeley communications use the darker Berkeley Blue paired with California Gold, but together they were too heavy, and using the gold color by itself was illegible.

The sketches below show several layouts I considered, to fit all the content in an organized, but interesting way.
